In girls volleyball, Lafayette senior Bailey Lowenhaupt was named the Bay Rivers District player of the year, and Grafton's Dena Montini was named coach of the year after leading the Clippers to a so-far unbeaten season. Lowenhaupt, Jamestown's Krista Hughes and Poquoson's Colby Kammermann joined Grafton's Morgan Kline, Sarah Campbell and Alyssa Hall on the first team. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's Elizabeth Stello was named the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools coach of the year, and NSA's Mackenzie Westfall was on a first team that also included player of the year Morgan Freeman of Cape Henry Collegiate.
Cape Henry Collegiate swept the top awards, with Max Wagner as player of the year and Adam Dierstein as coach of the year. Peninsula Catholic junior Colin Pennington made the second team.The Newport News Public Schools cable channel plans to broadcast Woodside's Eastern Region Division 6 first-round playoff against Maury on Friday night. The Newport News Solid Waste Division will not collect trash, recyclables or bulk waste through the rest of the week. Trash that would have been collected on Veterans Day will be picked up on Saturday. Thursday's pick up will be on Monday. Trash collection for Monday through Thursday will move forward a day, with pick up Tuesday through Friday. Residents are asked not to put anything on the curb today or Friday.
